The answer to this question might come as a surprise to you. Yes, as a matter of fact, God does keep secrets. By inspiration Moses wrote, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the word of this law” (Deut. 29:29).

This passage teaches us two critical truths: 1) There are things that God knows that we don’t know. They belong to Him and He has not shared them with us. 2) The things God has revealed to us are ours and He expects us to do them.

This reminds us that sometimes the best Bible answer to a Bible question is, “I don’t know. God has not revealed that to us.” Unfortunately, this is also the most difficult answer for some to give and for some to receive. Instead, we give answers rooted in guess work, supposition and hypothesis, doing much more harm than good. Worse yet, we accept answers deeply based in nothing more than the “think so’s” of men, and esteem them as “the truth.” This is not the way to rightly handle the word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15; 2 Cor. 4:2) nor will such “truths” set us free (John 8:31-32).

When a Christians speaks and acts, it should be “in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” (Col. 3:17). This means we are speaking and acting with His authority, or permission. We can’t do that with things He has not revealed. When a Christian speaks, it should be as the oracles of God (1 Pet. 4:11). We can’t do that when God’s word has not revealed the things we are teaching.

God has truly given us all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3). Therefore, let us learn to accept and act upon the things God has revealed to us and let us learn to be content that God knows best when it comes to the things that He has not revealed to us.
